A series of intracratonic basins occurs in North Africa between the Atlantic Ocean and the Red Sea. These basins are separated from one another by ridges of Precambrian igneous and metamorphic basement and tend to plunge northward toward the Mediterranean (Fig. ).These basins show a remarkably uniform Paleozoic stratigraphy, but their characters become distinctly different in the Mesozoic.   These basins contain giant resources of lignite and subbituminous coal. Coalbed methane development has been highly successful in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming, which currently accounts for about 25% of US coalbed methane production. The Powder River is a large intermontaine basin that formed during the Laramide orogeny.
